San doctors ground breaking research offers new hope for women

A ground-breaking new study undertaken by an Australian medical team led by the San’s interventional radiologist Dr Eisen Liang and gynaecologist Dr Bevan Brown is offering fresh hope for women facing the unwanted prospect of hysterectomy to treat heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and period pain.

Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) is a little-known, non-surgical procedure, often used to shrink fibroids (non-cancerous tumours of the womb). The research directed by Dr Liang at his clinic here at the San has shown UAE may also now be a beacon of hope for women whose lives are severely impaired by HMB and pain, and are facing the unwanted prospect of a hysterectomy.
