Therapy Dog at the San
In order to make the lives of patients a little more joyful and comforting, Ellie visits the Hospital weekly and meet patients at level 6 ward at the San.
Ellie is part of 1,000 plus Delta Therapy Dogs team across Australia who visit healthcare facilities and meet patients who have not been to their homes for a while or have not been with their pets for a long time.
The dogs also called ‘therapy dogs’ are assessed for their temperament and suitability for visiting care facilities before making any visits.
Seven year old Ellie who has been a constant feature at the Hospital since the last five years has comforted many patients and brought smiles to their faces.
“People that are really going through a hard time and want some relief find Ellie really helpful and joyful,” according to Volunteer Julie who is Ellie’s minder and also her owner.
“ We meet patients sometimes for a few minutes to half hour. Ellie spends around one to three hours meeting patients.
She brings that happiness as if she was their pet; so she actually makes a really long day for the patients, a bit shorter.”
