San Cancer Support Group member shares her story…
58 year old Pymble resident Etsuko Sugino-Pearson celebrated her cancer survival this week with 'pink ladies' raising awareness of breast cancer at the San Hospital's Pink Ribbon Day display.
With breast cancer affecting 1 in 8 Australian women and more than 3000 deaths annually, Etsuko knows she is one of the lucky ones.
"My Japanese mother always assumed that cancer was something we didn't have to worry about since there is no cancer in our family…the reality is my cancer was found during a routine mammogram and everyone needs to make sure they are screened regularly".
Etsuko had surgery to remove a lump in her breast as well as lymph nodes under her arm before she had chemotherapy and radiation.
" As a result of lymph nodes treatment I now wear a compression sleeve to control swelling. I do ballet twice a week and during summer I swim every day because the water pressure is good for my arm."
Etsuko attends the San Cancer Support Centre group meetings.
"One of my challenges of dealing with cancer has been having to explain my condition but at the support group I found people who understood what I was going through.
It has been a safe, confidential space that I could relax and be myself in. I got information and support, and I made friends...so celebrating my survival with the 'pink ladies' is very appropriate.
I hope these pink ladies remind other women to go and get checked regularly…it will save lives."
