Life changing fibroid surgery for women
San Interventional Radiologist Dr Eisen Liang is ramping up his personal campaign to increase awareness of life changing surgery for women suffering with Fibroids. Here he discusses his life's work and how he hopes to help:
To friends and colleagues….Many friends and relatives still don't know what I do for a living and very few know what I am passionate about in my working life.
Twenty years ago, I stumbled into a case that I have to block the arteries of the uterus (Uterine Artery Embolisation) to save the life of a young woman profusely bleeding from a cervical ectopic pregnancy. That was my first case of UAE.
Around that time, a paper in Lancet was published, describing the use of UAE to treat fibroids. By restricting blood supply to the uterus and starving the fibroids, causing fibroid shrinkage and alleviation of women's suffering from heavy menses, bladder symptoms and period pain. I thought that was a great way of treating fibroid symptoms without surgically removing them, and so afterwards I did my first case of UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolisation) now almost twenty years ago.
For the past 10 years, I have been doing UFE at the SAN, helping women suffering from fibroid symptoms. Although we are getting more than 90% success rate, and there are many literature reports regarding the success of this non-surgical procedure, UFE remains unknown to many women suffering from fibroid symptoms. Quite often even GPs and gynaecologists are unfamiliar with UFE.
This year, I have decided to dedicate my time and effort in raising the awareness of UFE amongst women suffering from fibroid symptoms.
I have set up a Facebook page for UFE Awareness - https://www.facebook.com/UFE-Awareness-218790465196531/
I would like to get the message out to as many women as possible. Please click the above link, LIKE and SHARE the message with all your women friends.
If you are not familiar with Facebook, just forward the link to this website page to all your women friends.
I am sure some of your friends or friends of your friends will benefit from the message.
My sincere thanks to you.
